Smith MGT/434 October 28, 2013 Thomas Affirmative Action Affirmative action is an action that was purposefully designed to provide full and equal opportunities for employment and education for women, minorities, and other individuals belonging to disadvantaged groups. This paper will assess the rudiments of Affirmative Action as it applies to public and private sector employers. The paper will also evaluate what employers are subject to affirmative action plans, what the plans require employers to do, and what happens if employers do not meet the objectives of the affirmative action plan. The plan must contain the following: the employer’s current workforce in regard to race and sex, a detail analysis stating whether minorities or females are under-represented or under-utilized in the workforce, the rules and regulations for job categories in which minorities or females are under-represented, an action plan or goals necessary to fix the problem areas, and a detail time table for when the employer plans to achieve these goals. When developing an affirmative action plan this can be time consuming and this requires heavy documentation, reviews, and updates. When implementing an affirmative action plan, the plan must apply to all facilities and employees (Phillips, 2010). Courts can require employers to adopt an affirmative action plan as a remedy under Title VII. The requirements in court ordered affirmative action plans prevent employers from allowing unqualified individuals from being hired or promoted. A court ordered affirmative action plan must be temporary only until the employer can achieve the goals set under the plan. There are strict penalties if the affirmative action plan is not followed. When an employer is under a court order to obey an affirmative action plan, the employer could be subject to hefty fines. A good man is hard to find the Essay A Good Man is Hard to Find: The Grandmothers Grace Flannery OConnors A Good Man is Hard to Find tells the metaphorical tale of a familys fatal confrontation with The Misfit, an escaped serial killer. The incidents and characters throughout the story are aspects of a plot intending to symbolize the spiritual grace passed from one human to another, without regard for kindness or evil. The prominent character in OConnors story is the grandmother, who embodies this grace. By including imperfections in the development of the grandmothers character, OConnor shows the indiscriminatory property of grace she possesses. The grandmother is the most developed character of the story. She contains several traits that coincide with the stereotypical elderly southern woman. Some of her notions are bizarre and trivial, and ignored by her family, such as the possible attack by The Misfit, a trip to Tennessee instead of Florida, and a fear of feline asphyxiation. John Wesley and June Star have little if any respect for their paternal grandmother. She has to go everywhere we go, whines June Star (194). The grandmother also dresses immaculately, even for a car trip, simply because in an accident anyone seeing her dead on the highway would know at once that she was a lady (194). She calls attention to pointless details such as mileage, the speed of the car, and scenic road-side attractions. Also typical, the grandmother holds a deep appreciation for incidents which are of no value to others, such as the beauty of the landscape, respect for elders, and courting rituals during her childhood. The character traits of the grandmother are in no way ideal. Not only is she random and frivolous, but she also demonstrates hypocrisy and manipulation. Arent you ashamed? she asks when June Star insults the owner of Red Sammys Barbecue (196), but experiences no personal shame at all in stating that Little niggers in the country dont have things like we do (195). The grandmother knows there is no secret compartment in the house she wishes to visit, yet she tells the children this compartment exists in order to convince Bailey into stopping. The familys inevitable demise originates when the grandmother sets them on the road to see this mysterious house, which begins the set-up for the spiritually symbolic interpretation of the story. Upon meeting The Misfit, communication is almost solely between The Misfit and the grandmother. The grandmother shrieks, Youre The Misfit!I recognized you at once to which The Misfit replies, It would have been better for all you of you, lady, if you hadnt of reckernized me (199). Without regard for her family, the grandmother thinks first of herself, crying, You wouldnt shoot a lady, would you? (199). As she converses with The Misfit, she learns of his decent parents and good up-bringing, and can therefore categorize him as a a good man despite the fact that he has killed innocent people. Throughout the conversation, despite the death of her family, the grandmother discovers The Misfit was arrested for a crime he might not have committed, and begins to interrogate him on his spiritual practices. She asks him if he prays and advises prayer as a method for his salvation. Near this point in the story the feeling of the conversation turns from the grandmother attempting to save her own life to a genuine interest in the man before her. As her family members are killed one by one, they become less important to the story which becomes intensely focused on the interaction between The Misfit and the grandmother. The scientific world was excited with the newly discovered force of nature, but they soon realized that that the discovery was not the best for human race. They soon learned that the great discovery was a threat to health. Unfortunately, long time went by until their concerns were taken seriously. Marie Curie denied that radiation was bad for health even though everyone around her, who was exposed to radiation, was dyeing from leukemia. ?She never fully acknowledged that her work had ruined her health? Marie curie herself was chronically ill and nearly blind from all the exposure to radioactive materials. But she never admitted that that her work led to her poor health. Radioactivity she worked on eventually led her into an early grave at the age of 67. Marie Curie was so fixed on her research that there is no reason to think that she would have stopped her research if she had known the health risks associated with her work. Her daughter and son-in-law, also Nobel Prize winners, continued her experiments with radioactivity and were eventually killed by the diseases caused by radiation. In 1898 Marie and Pierre Curie began to experiment with radiation. Initially they started by studying emissions from various minerals which led them to win a Nobel Prize in 1903 that they shared and another one to Marie alone in 1911. ?Their first accomplishment was to show that radioactivity was a property of atoms themselves.? Radium's ?radioactivity is due to the large size of the atom, which makes the nucleus unstable and prone to decay, usually to radon and then lead, by emitting particles and energy as it seeks a more stable configuration.? Radium has a bluish glow that caught people's attention and the companies tried to exploit this new invention.
